Dear teachers and students,
Good morning!

It is my honor to give a speech here today and I would like to share some of my college application experience with you.

The great poet W.H. Auden once talked about how he loathed using the typewriter, but he admitted that the impersonal and hideous typescript helped him in self-criticism. As a person who feels it is extremely hard to directly face my own deficits, I have this quote saved in my phone as a constant reminder to look critically at myself.

I got my first SAT result in April and it was not to my satisfaction. Instead of being honest and face my procrastination problem when preparing for the math or reading, I chose to lie to myself and blame bad luck for everything. This evasiveness resulted in another failure on my second exam. To many people’s surprise, I actually feel thankful for my failures because they taught me that we can all cheat ourselves for a while, but not forever. So, for those students who are preparing for standardized exams and the gaokao, my suggestion is to be truthful with yourself.

Your activities and experiences are parts that weight more and more heavily in the application process. For me, activities are opportunities of self-exploration. My summer school program made me feel certain in pursuing neuroscience, and at the same time it expanded my knowledge in this field. Jumping out of biology related activities, which is my comfort zone, I believe the theater workshop and Taichi class guided by Ms. Chen Miaojuan and Dr. Steven Edmonds respectively has also been an essential part of my school life. It is my honor to be one of their students to listen to their immensely inspiring lessons. As individuals, we all have our own unique paths and perspectives. Do not participate in activities just to do activities, but for your own passion and interests. Compared to crafting the so called perfect resume recognized by an Ivy league school, exploring freely and cherishing every chance you get regardless of the result is what I think is the best advice for all students.

I want to give special thanks to my college counselor Mr. Mu Chou who told me that he was admitted to UC Davis not knowing how well it fit him. If I could give myself a suggestion a month ago after being rejected from my ED1 choice, I would say “Don’t fall into the trap of self-denial or lose confidence in yourself.” Certain students do in fact fit certain schools, and admission officers sometimes reject you simply because they think you might feel uncomfortable in their school’s culture. And this is what makes college research valuable and important.

Lastly, I would like to thank The Houde Academy. Though our school is relatively new and is not as established as some other schools in China, it has provided me with a valuable environment in which we have explore and grown together. From an experimental education program to a flourishing school that is now going to have its first class of graduates, The Houde Academy has courageously overcome all sorts of difficulties. On this first day of the semester, I hope we can all believe in ourselves and our school and start this new semester with confidence, gratitude and tenacity.

Thank you
